LibGuide: AU Columbus Center IRC

Published this morning is the new AU Columbus Center IRC LibGuide. This information portal details resources available in the IRC circulating and reference collections and provides access to locating them on-line (via the AU library catalog) and in the AU Columbus Center.

Many library resources are available to off-campus students; on-line databases, electronic books, Inter-library Loan, and OhioLINK will support your educational endeavor at Ashland University. Take a few minutes and explore resources featured here and remember, the main campus library web site contains a wealth of information.

Award Books: Coretta Scott King Awards

"Given to African American authors and illustrator for outstanding inspirational and educational contributions, the Coretta Scott King Book Award titles promote understanding and appreciation of the culture of all peoples and their contribution to the realization of the American dream of a pluralistic society". - CSK Author & Illustrator Awards.

The Columbus Center IRC Corretta Scott King Author & Illustrator Award collection features the winning illustrator title and select honor books from 1986 through 2010. A small number of author books are also included within the collection, the catalog record notes field indicates what award was earned by each title.
These books have a call number beginning with Col King plus the year. For example, the 2009 Coretta Scott King illustrator award winning book is The Blacker the Berry: Poems, illustrated by Floyd Cooper. It's call number is COL King 2009. Part of the IRC circulating collection, juvenile award books circulate for a period of three weeks with four renewals.

The following Coretta Scott King illustrator and author titles have been added to the AU Columbus Center circulating collection:

IRC Reference Collection

Ashland University Columbus Center IRC has a reference collection developed to assist with locating, selecting, evaluating, and researching children and young adult author and illustrators. Within this collection are subject categories of awards and directories, bio-bibliographies and biographies, encyclopedias and dictionaries, history and criticisms, and indexes. IRC reference items are part of the non-circulating collection.

Activity Books: Games

Activity books, also known as teacher resource books, are part of the IRC circulating collection. These titles cover a wide range of classroom subjects such as learning centers, ESL, file folder games, language arts, math, multicultural, science, and spanish.

Part of the circulating collection, activity book call numbers begin col activ and are shelved according to subject area in magizine files for easy browsing.

Award Books: Newbery Medal

"The Newbery Medal is awarded annually by the American Library Association for the most distinguished American children's book published the previous year." Named for John Newbery, it is "the first children's book award in the world. Its terms, as well as its long history, continue to make it the best known and most discussed children's book award in this country." -- ALSC Newbery Medal


The Columbus Center IRC Newbery Award collection includes a copy of each winning title from 1990 through 2010. These books have a call number beginning with Col Newbery plus the year. For example, the 2010 Newbery Medal winner was When You Reach Me, by Rebecca Stead; it's call number is COL Newbery 2010. Part of the IRC circulating collection, juvenile award books circulate for a period of three weeks with four renewals.
