Last week we celebrated the grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony for the AU Columbus Center IRC. If you have not yet visited the center, stop in and talk to graduate assistants Esther Coley and Mike McMurtrey about the center and what it has to offer students, faculty, and staff.
“The new Instructional Resource Center was made possible by the close collaboration and coordinated effort among the Provost's Office, the Library, Schar College of Education and the Columbus Center,” said Dr. James Schnug, associate professor and assistant dean for academic programs at the Columbus Center. “It was truly a team effort.”
The event included a welcome by Provost Dr. Frank Pettigrew, who authorized the go-ahead for the center enhancement over a year ago. According to Schnug, budgets from the Columbus Center, Library, Provost’s Office, Schar College’s Dean’s Office and EC Bachelor’s Completion program were all tapped to get the center up and running.
Others recognized during the ceremony were Ed Krakora, head librarian at the University, who spearheaded the move to make the Columbus Center an official OhioLink drop-off point so that requested books and resources did not have to go through the main campus library circulation system; Diane Schrecker, curriculum librarian for the Instructional Resource Center at main campus, who spent countless hours both in Columbus and on main campus co-creating a purchase plan with Schnug, developing a web page presence, accumulating a start-up inventory of books, machines, and materials and advising on the physical layout; and Mike Russell, Columbus Center director, who worked with the IRC and the Bookstore transformation and worked with vendors to produce the areas in the IRC.
The event ended with a ribbon-cutting of the new facility. The Columbus Center now offers a wing devoted to student services and includes a remodeled bookstore as well as areas where students can find quick, one-stop access to technology, instructional resources, bookstore textbooks and products, copying, and even expanded vending machine offerings. -- AU News 11/2/10
